Do Not Be in Denial about Pet Food Recall

August 23rd, 2007 by jacky

Many pet owners may hear about the pet food recall in bits and pieces due to work or other everyday tasks. In this blog, we try to present as much information about the pet food recall to allow friends and family members to keep one another on top of the tainted pet food that can kill our dogs, cats and other pet family members.

To my surprise, a neighbor’s cat became ill about two weeks ago. She found Khufu lying in a puddle of blood and immediately took her to the vet. The first veterinary hospital almost immediately diagnosed with “cancer” and written off. After protests about having her put down, Khufu was prescribed antibiotics and a different brand of “cat food”.

Khufu lives in a household with another cat, and three dogs. Until a few months ago, there were only two dogs, and they stayed outside while the cats stayed indoors. Prior to the latest dog coming into the household, the outdoor dogs were fed Ol’ Roy dog food, almost exclusively, outside. The cats were rarely exposed to the dog food bowls. Pet Food Removed by Wal-Mart

August 21st, 2007 by jacky

Do not let down your guards yet, against poisonous pet food! Wal-Mart has quietly removed two types of dog treats made in China from it’s store shelves, even though the products have not been issued an official recall.

This latest pet food recall appears to have stemmed from some complaints that the jerky treats made in China, causes fatal kidney failure in dogs. Wal-Mart quietly pulled from store shelves, Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading on July 26, spokeswoman Deisha Galberth said late Monday. Wal-Mart does not know if these products are sold in all stores, but they have taken extra measures to prevent the sales of these jerky treats.

“When we took it off shelves at the end of July, we pulled it based on the customer feedback so we could do testing prior to announcing anything publicly,” Galberth said. “That’s why did not make a public announcement — it was still going through the testing process.”

One complaint by a La Porte, Indiana woman , Sherri Shelton who had to put her 7-yr old terrier down after feeding her dogs Bestro’s Chicken jerky Treats from Wal-Mart. Shelton had taken her dog, Sheba to the vet in early July and was given a clean bill of health at that time. Shortly after the vet visit, Sheba began behaving oddly and on a couple of occasions, was found lying in her own urine. Read the rest of this entry »

Pet Food Recall Sparks New Pet Food Testing

August 17th, 2007 by jacky

Good News, after all of the recent bad news of recent months about contaminated pet food threatening the lives of our dogs and cats, a silver lining may be emerging! Natural Balance Pet Foods have announced a new program that allows consumers to receive test results of the Natural Balance Pet Foods purchased. The “Buy With Confidence” program launched by Natural Balance allows pet owners to track the testing of their pet food.

Not only have Natural Balance provided immediate access to test results of their pet food, they also added testing for Cyanuric Acid and melamine. Remember, melamine contamination fueled major pet food recalls by some of the largest pet food manufacturers. The recalled pet food was manufactured with imported wheat gluten tainted by melamine, a toxic chemical used to make plastics.

The new “Buy With Confidence” service, allows you to use the internet, and other web-enabled devices to view Natural Balance pet food test results. When you go to this link , look for your “Best By” date on the pet food product in the results section. When found, you will know that the samples tested from that date code met the FDA guidelines for the tests listed. In the video below, Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Have a Hot Dog in Summer

June 27th, 2007 by jacky

It’s summertime, hooray! Time for fun and frolic in the sun! Summer is the time when temperatures are most likely to be hotter in most areas of the nation and the sun protection comes out! But, what about your dog or cat?

Dogs and cats that are generally outdoors may have to adjust slowly to the seasonal changes form cool to hot! That’s exactly what my friend’s dog needed when the temperatures outside went from mid 80 degrees to hot 100′s! All temperatures in this post are in Fahrenheit degrees.

In the last week, temperatures have been going changing from the 90′s up to a 112 degrees at the high time of the day! Most days, my friend’s three dogs stay outdoors for the majority of the day while they are at work. Needless to say, the small dog, a daschund, became weak and unable to walk straight!
